The Rev. Richard Karohl and his wife, Diane, are people who love people. The couple called Grand Island home for 12 years when he was pastor at Faith United Methodist Church from 1993 to 2005. For the last three years, he has been a pastor in Aurora. But that all changes today when the moving truck comes to load up the Karohls' house full of boxes. Next stop -- a two-story American foursquare in Oakland (pop. 1,400), where Karohl will be the pastor for both the Oakland First United Methodist Church and the Memorial United Methodist Church in Lyons just seven miles away. Sunday sermons will be at 9 a.m. in Oakland and 10:30 a.m. in Lyons for the consolidated congregation that has about 400 members total. Richard looks forward to the smaller number so he can get to personally know everyone. Diane is also excited to meet the people of the church, but is already enamored with the picturesque church itself. "There is an amazing picture of Christ knocking at the door. It's not the usual one you see, but one we love even more," she said. Diane said the only other time they've seen such a picture was a few years ago in St. Paul's Cathedral in London. It so compelled them, they bought a print of it, but hadn't seen it again -- until they walked into their new church in Oakland.
