| "The Golden Gate Bridge is boring. Everybody's seen that! Come down to our recycling center instead." So said San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom in his talk this morning at The New Yorker Stories From the Near Future conference. The city has one of the most ambitious recycling programs in the world, and Newsom has been dubbed the "green mayor". Of the 800 or so U.S. cities that have committed to their own better-than-Kyoto greenhouse gas plans, Newsom was skeptical. "How do we measure that? How do we know we're delivering? Who's the
independent verifier?" he asked, adding that San Francisco is the first
city to ask for third-party analysis of its CO2-cutting achievements. On a side note, Newsom's talk felt like a campaign practice speech. I'm betting that he'll run for California state governor in 2010.
