It was 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt was beginning his first term as president and Jimmie Foxx of the Philadelphia Athletics was on his way to hitting 48 home runs to lead the majors that year. It was also when Irma VanHousen, a Corning resident, was working for the Corning Glass Works at the main plant. “When I started here, we made fuse plugs on machines,’’ she said Wednesday.  I’ve seen a lot of people come and go.” VanHousen, now 100 years young, was one of seven retirees from the company honored at a luncheon at the Corning Museum of Glass for 75 years of service. “It’s a wonderful privilege to be honored like this,” she said.  “I enjoyed my work for Corning and they were always good to me.” Also honored Wednesday were 37 retirees for 50 years of service. The retirees worked in the Corning-area plants and facilities in Bradford, Charleroi, and Wellsboro, Pa. The luncheon began with a picture slideshow, followed by a lunch that gave the honorees time to eat and mingle among themselves.  Wendell P. Weeks, chairman and chief executive officer, then thanked the group for their commitment and service to Corning.  “I am pleased to have the opportunity to recognize all of you,” Weeks said.  “You have all played an important part in the success of this company.  It is an honor to build on your foundation.
