I must be careful what I say about this subject, but the search for a successor to Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor is taking an awfully long time, isn’t it? As Mandrake revealed recently, a terna (official list) of Archbishop Vincent Nichols, Archbishop Peter Smith and Bishop Arthur Roche has been submitted to Rome by the Nuncio. But I gather that more than one terna has been rejected. Senior figures want no change after Cormac Murphy O'Connor goes Catholic traditionalists desperately want the job to go to someone in the mould of Benedict XVI (ie, none of the above) – and their voice has been heard “deep in the Apostolic Palace”.
