Clutching a bat almost equal to her height, a 5-year-old Roslindale girl stood in the batter’s box at field at the Ohrenberger School and waited for a pitch. As the ball slowly sailed toward her, something happened that she planned to tell her older brother about when she got home: she got her first hit ever. With the ball dribbling into the field, a chorus of cheers erupted not only from the dugout, but also from the opposing players. Even the pitcher, Boston Police Sergeant James Lynch, offered applause as officers James Doiron and David Bianchetto directed the slightly confused young batter to first base where she smiled, danced and jumped up and down with excitement. From the outfield, officers Luis Rivera and Ed Roach showed the pintsized athlete the way around the bases. It was the second time in as many months that police personnel from Area E-5 donned jerseys and baseball hats for a community softball game and cookout. In addition to providing a safe and fun environment for the Parkway’s youngest residents, the summer celebrations bolster the relationships between kids and cops. The event, held last Thursday on the grounds of the elementary school in West Roxbury and attracting triple-digit attendance, was for the children and families living on and around Stellman Road in Roslindale.
