His rep told the press that he was complaining of chest pains and went to St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica. Carlin later died at the medical center. People magazine reported the cause of death was heart failure. Carlin had a history of heart problems and also had a history of drug and alcohol addiction with several trips to rehab. In 1987 the Supreme Court ruled that his act was indecent but he continued to perform it live despite what the courts said.
