Although the innovations Dan Hawkins used at Boise State and brought to Colorado have made him an offensive genius in the eyes of some, he knows defense wins games.
With that in mind, Hawkins is giving considerable attention to his defense during spring practice after the Buffaloes ranked in the middle of the Big 12 pack in 2007 but lost the league's leading tackler, linebacker Jordon Dizon.
"What I don't want our guys thinking is, 'The head coach, he's an offensive coach.' I don't want them thinking that, because you can win games with defense," Hawkins said. "So I want to spend more time with those guys over there, loving 'em up and being involved with what's going on there."
