Many of the better-known Wiffle ball sluggers in town were on hand for the seventh annual Firecracker Wiffle Ball tournament at “Bussiere Field” and “Bussway Park.” Danny Bussiere said the event started as a block party on Diane Lane and ultimately became a fundraiser Wiffle ball tournament for the Colchester Food Bank and to support American soldiers in the Middle East. “We had enough people, so we decided to start holding the fundraiser for the Colchester Food Bank,” he said. “Last year, we donated 550 pounds of food. If we ever get out of Iraq, we’ll probably go back to donating to the food bank.” Charlie Mazzola is a neighbor of Bus siere’s and has lived in town 10 years. Mazzola went searching for sponsors and said the Antonino Auto Group was a key contributor. “Antonino Auto Group played a big role in providing food,” he said. “Basically, without the sponsors, we wouldn’t be able to raise all this money.” Colchester resident Sue Trama has lived in town 19 years and her son, Brandon, 24, serves in the Army C Company 2-30 Infantry Forward Operating Base Loyalty near Sadr City, Iraq. “I’m very thankful and appreciative of the neighbors and friends and all of the support and caring for my son, his unit, and all of the troops overseas,” she said.
