Independence Blvd.): 1. Fig Tree (1601 E. 7th St.) is the choice if you've given yourself plenty of time and want an elegant experience. Cajun Queen (1800 E. 7th St.) should fill the bill, with Creole/Cajun fare (try the crawfish etouffee), packed-in seating and lively music. 3. Lupie's (2718 Monroe Road) offers a much more casual vibe, with classic Charlotte-icana on the walls (great photos) and chili and burgers on the tables (plus lots of veggies); especially good for showing out-of-towners a slice of the city. 4. Machu Picchu (4715 E. Independence Blvd.) offers a more unusual meal, with a handsome but casual setting and Peruvian food. (Brave? Try the anticuchos. Cautious? Try the lomo saltado, a take on steak and potatoes.) 5. Tucked into a plain little shopping-center, Portofino's (3124 Eastway Drive) dishes out pizzas and pastas for dine-in or via its bustling takeout counter. ...
