The price of gasoline at one local station fell for a few short hours, when a Brighton church sponsored a discount gas event as a community service activity. To knock down the price of gas by 25 cents per gallon, the Boston United Pentecostal Church paid $500 to the owner of Market Street Gulf, a gas station on 195 Market St. “With the increased prices in gas, we figured we’d give back to the community and have a day when we offered discounted gas just as a token of appreciation to the community,” said Garth Mitchell, a minister at the United Pentecostal Church. Community service should always affect the neighborhood in a meaningful way, said Mitchell. “Our job is to let folks in the community know there’s a church that cares.” The event was in response to the steady increase in gas prices, which have gone up almost $1 per gallon this past year, in the state. The church may sponsor another discount gas event later in the summer, said Mitchell. The Boston United Pentecostal Church first opened its doors at 73 Brooks St. in Brighton roughly 25 years ago, under the direction of Pastor Denver Stanford Sr., who also encourages food and toy drives, although this is the church’s first charitable service activity involving fuel.
