CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA--Deputy Chief James E. Graham, Jr., a 31-year veteran of Chesterfield Fire and Emergency Medical Services, has been named Interim Chief of Fire and EMS by Jay Stegmaier, Chesterfield county administrator. The appointment comes as a result of the retirement of Chief Paul W. Mauger, who, after 31 years of service, retires September 1, 2008. Hailing from Franklin Square, New York, Graham began his employment with the county in 1977. He served as a chief officer for 23 years in the training and operations divisions and, as a deputy chief, he oversaw the Operations and Management Services sections of the department. Chief Graham holds a Bachelor's Degree in Public Safety from Virginia Commonwealth University and is a graduate of the Executive Fire Officers Program at the National Fire Academy. He has served as adjunct instructor in the Fire Science Program at J. Sergeant Reynolds Community College for the past 23 years. Chief Graham and Ann, his wife of 30 years, have three adult sons, James III, Joseph and John. They reside in the Midlothian area of the county. Chesterfield's Fire and EMS Department has 461 full-time employees, approximately 250 active fire and EMS volunteers and a budget of more than $40 million.
