Referees often find themselves in the wars, having to put up with verbal abuse from players and fans alike, but the official taking charge of Chelsea’s quarter-final decider against Fenerbahce tonight can lay claim to seeing the ugly side of football up close and personal. His name is Herbert Fandel, from Germany, and if the name sounds familiar it’s because he was the official in charge of the infamous Euro 2008 qualifying clash between Denmark and Sweden in Copenhagen.
