Business leaders have raised more than $4.8 million for the Charlotte Chamber, exceeding this year's goal despite an economic downturn, the Chamber said Friday. The fundraising campaign lasted about three months and involved 130 volunteers from 24 corporate teams. This year's tally, which represents more than half of the Chamber's budget, is up from $4.7 million in 2007. "We're just very delighted and frankly, humbled by the support of the business community," Chamber President Bob Morgan said. Because of the economy and the pressure it's put on local businesses, "we were challenged," he said. "The real estate and homebuilding areas, in particular, are strong supporters. ... We had to make up for those losses in other areas." Charlotte's "big three" companies -- Bank of America, Wachovia and Duke Energy -- were the biggest contributors, but the campaign involved contributors of all sizes, Morgan said. The Charlotte Chamber's fundraising campaign is the largest annual Chamber campaign in the country, Morgan said. "We're being shown as resilient," said Pat Riley, Chamber chairman and president of the Allen Tate Co. "This was a real win, especially with the changing economy and challenges everyone is feeling."
