SUNBURY — The second annual Cardboard Boat Regatta got off to a great start, all five adult entries actually left the dock without sinking, four of them made it around the small course in one piece. Sean Dimon and his boat — “Sharks Fins-Up” — was in the lead for a moment before it tipped over halfway through the course and spilling the captain into the Susquehanna River. Sisters Colleen Colonna of Selinsgrove and Kim Colonna of Harrisburg skippered their boat “Tu Sorella” into first place of the adult division. They were followed closely by John Elick of Bloomsburg, who was the captain of the “One in A Million” ship. “This is my first year so I freelanced the design,” said Dimon. “It only took me three days to build it, but I just finished painting it three hours ago.” Navy veteran Jeffrey Lesher spent a week working on his vessel. “I think we are going to sink,” he said prior to the race. He and his first mate, 9-year-old son Matthew, did indeed go down midway through the race course. Matthew waived to the crowd as the last of the gray cardboard slipped beneath the calm river surface. The children’s category attracted enough attention to force three heats. Several boats failed to survive those qualifying races, but there were still smiles all around. ...
