Is there a link between sporting success and consumer confidence? Sir Martin Sorrell — chairman of WPP , the global advertising group — certainly thinks so, if his comments on yesterday’s Today programme are anything to go by. He suggested that recovery from the current global economic downturn could be linked to events such as the football World Cup in South Africa and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. ‘There speaks a true advertising man,’ responded Jim Naughtie cynically. But maybe Sorrell is on to something. After all, I’m sure Britain would be considerably less concerned by the credit crunch if one of the home nations had even qualified for Euro 2008. And we’d all have been spending our disposable income on champagne and strawberries if Andy Murray had beaten Nadal for a place in the Wimbledon semi-finals. ... |
