| The head of the CIA, Gen. Michael V. Hayden, gave a talk at the University of Kansas about the CIA's concerns for the future (hat tip Dot Earth ). The number one concern listed: population growth. From the speech : By midcentury, the best estimates point to a world population of more than 9 billion. Most of that growth will occur in countries least able to sustain it, a situation that will likely fuel instability and extremism, both in those areas and beyond.
Many poor, already fragile states — where governance is difficult today — will grow rapidly. In Afghanistan, Liberia, Niger and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the population is expected to triple by midcentury. The number of people in Ethiopia, Nigeria and Yemen will more than double. Furthermore, all of those countries will have large concentrations of young people. If their basic freedoms and basic needs — food, housing, education, employment and so on — are not met, they could be easily attracted to violence, civil unrest or extremism. I've never been to impressed with Malthus pessimism. We've done a pretty good job keeping up with population so far as feeding, clothing, housing. The countries where this is a problem tend to have a lack of capitalism rather than a lack of resources.
And the countries General Hayden also have a large deficit of capitalism. So they will likely have problems meeting the basic needs of their citizens. And then they'll s ... |
