A projected 37 percent cut in the library budget has been significantly reduced thanks in part to a $210,000 lifeline from the library Board of Trustees, but jobs will still be lost and operating hours trimmed, Library Director Harry Williams said Wednesday. “State certification could be in jeopardy,” Williams said as he and library trustees look to Mayor James E. Harrington’s proposed fiscal 2009 budget that is headed to the City Council Finance Committee on Monday. In an earlier budget forecast, Harrington projected a 37 percent cut in the library budget, resulting in 21 jobs lost. He filed his final budget with the City Council earlier this week showing a reduction in the projected shortfall for the city, from $4.6 million to an estimated $3.5 million. The library budget would drop by 12 percent from the current $2 million and eight jobs would be cut, six from layoffs and two by attrition, according to Williams. Harrington indicated he would seek Proposition 21/2 overrides to restore funding for the library, school transportation, Police and Fire departments. It is now up to the City Council to decide if the questions will be on the ballot, and it is unlikely that would happen until the presidential election in November.
