One of the bike’s brake levers became embedded in his thigh when he landed on it. Rescue workers elected not to remove the lever – and about 10 inches of handlebar – before transporting Walter to the hospital. “The firefighters had to cut my old bicycle with the Jaws of Life, so it was ruined,” Walter said. Thanks to the Stoughton Fire Department and donations from the local firefighters union, Stoughton police and BJ’s Wholesale Club, Walter got a new bicycle and helmet. He won’t be able to ride his new bike until the stitches in his thigh are removed. He spent nine days in Boston Children’s Hospital and endured multiple surgeries. “The family is really thankful about the new bicycle, and Walter was excited when we called and told him,” Capt.
