The rules are simple at the Gill home and hobby farm the week before the Boone County Fair. “You either work, or you don’t come over,” said Donna Gill of Winnebago County. And with her children presenting 11 goats, 10 rabbits, 120 chickens and other poultry at this year’s fair, you get the sense she’s not joking. “It’s a lot of work, but when you get to the fair and everything is in its place, you really enjoy it,” she said. Four of the six Gill children are competing in 4-H competitions this year, and the others will once they’re old enough. The fair draws tens of thousands each year with music, food and entertainment, but keeping the spirit of Boone County’s agricultural background always has been a goal of the fair, said 18-year fair president Al Henninger. “We want to classify our fair as a showcase for agriculture,” Henninger said. “We have a lot more urban people coming out here from the suburbs and so forth, and this allows them to get a little better handle on what (agriculture) is all about.” Last year, despite major flooding that hit the Rock River Valley, more than 194,000 people attended the six-day fair. The event broke an attendance record the year before with 208,000 attendees. The first Boone County Fair was called by the Boone County Agricultural Society in 1855 and held next to the Belvidere Cemetery, according to research provided by the Boone County Historical Museum.
