I recommend Ratzinger's Faith by Tracey Rowland (pub OUP) which is a very good study of PB's theology. She gives a very good historical summary of theology before and after Vatican II. She points out that liberals and traditionalists tend to see Vatican II as a decisive break whereas Pope Benedict and the Resourcement group emphasise the "Hermeneutic of Continuity."
