Both Boeing and Airbus say they expect a solid year this year, despite several carrier grounding their gas-guzzling older planes, according to a report in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. While neither manufacturer expects to hit the record heights achieved last year, both expect to log between 700 and 800 new aircraft orders this year, according to the report. An order book of that size would be about half of what Boeing and Airbus recorded in 2007, but it would still be a better-than-average year. Both manufacturers are banking on airlines replacing their older planes for more fuel efficient newer ones. "It's a very challenging market but we are still seeing good response," Scott Carson, Boeing's head of commercial aircraft, told the paper. Since the start of the year, Airbus has logged 435 orders, while Boeing has 418. Both, however, are expected to substantially raise their count at next month's Farnborough airshow in England.
