Years ago, I met photographer Peter Beste for dinner in SoHo to review his portfolio. Flipping through it, I was overwhelmed by his images of Norway’s Black Metal scene, a nightmarish vision of pancake make-up and Norse mythology, heavy metal music and heavy metal jewelry, flowing locks and Satanic thoughts. The images alone made me uneasy; the stories Peter told made me queasy: murder, church burning, graveyard desecration. What started as juvenile frenzy came to symbolise the start of a war against Christianity, a return to the worship of the ancient Norse gods, and the complete rejection of mainstream society. Despite this seeming to be at odds with their mission against the mainstream, Peter got in with them and spent eight years documenting their secret society.
