Almost 100 area seniors gathered at the Senior Center last Thursday for the annual Mystic Valley Elder Services barbecue. While dining on potato salad, burgers and dogs from Lindley of Everett, attendees chatted happily. State Sen. Pat Jehlen, D-Medford, even dropped by to say hello. “I like to come visit with people when I can and I’m a big fan of what Mystic Valley Elder Services does,” said Jehlen. She told the crowd never to hesitate to call her if they have any concerns about what might be going on in their communities. “The food was very good,” said Elaine Haley, who had just finished her plate. “I always come here if I’m not on vacation. My favorite part is the socialization.” John DeBonis, sitting nearby, said he is happy to have the Senior Center in his community. This was his first time at the annual barbecue. “I don’t usually barbecue much,” said DeBonis. “I usually go down to the beach and play my guitar. It’s a great place though.” “Yes, they’re very accommodating,” agreed Arlene Boland, from across the table. “They do this every year. I love it.” Jehlen made her rounds through the tables. She paused for a few pictures. She said home heating is shaping up to be a big challenge for area seniors this winter. “I worry that people will feel so worried that they will vote for Question 1,” said Jehlen, “which would eliminate the state income tax.
