The Winnebago County Health Department is offering free bacteria testing kits for people in flood-affected areas who own private water wells. Health department environmental health director Larry Swacina said well owners should wait until floodwater has receded from the area of the well before using the test kit. “Turn on your tap, which turns the pump on, and run your water until it runs clear,” Swacina said. “Once you’ve gotten to that point, then come get a test kit.” Residents are to perform the tests at home, then bring the kits back to the pickup site or the Winnebago County Health Department for analysis, said spokeswoman Sue Fuller. The Health Department sends test results to residents via the mail, she said. Test kits may be obtained from 8 a.m. until noon and from 1 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays and from 8 a.m. until noon on Fridays at the Winnebago County Health Department, 401 Division St; or from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays at the following sites: Cherry Valley Township, 4875 Blackhawk Road, Cherry Valley, 815-874-5785.
