The death toll resulting from the powerful earthquake that hit China on Monday afternoon today is continuing to rise. The official Xinhua newsagency says that at least 8700 people were killed in Sichuan province. Houses, schools, hospitals and factories have collapsed across the province. The provincial disaster relief authorities say that around 80 percent of the buildings have collapsed in Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County in Sichuan. The quake's epicentre was 92 kilometres northwest of Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province. It registered 7.8 on the Richter scale and could be felt as far away as Bangkok and Hanoi. Local authorities in the city of Dujiangyan say a three-storey school building collapsed trapping some 900 students under the rubble. The international airport in Chengdu has been closed. Beijing has allocated 18.4 million euros for disaster relief and deployed the army to help the victims. ...
