A friend commented that the arts scene in Singapore is rather dead. She's an amateur singer with her own band. It is pretty obvious that there are many fanatics of the Arts here in Singapore. There is not a show called "Front", "promoting the Arts scene". So is the Arts scene really dead? I am not a very arty farty person and know nuts about the technicalities in the Arts. However, I do think I am a credible source of critism. One, I am the average Singaporean that keeps up with the flow of things. Two, I am the average person; not poor but not rich either so my level of disposable income is average. Three, I am street wise enough to know what is happening around me and this critically about it. Now about the Arts, I feel that it is a very subjective entity. It has a lot to do with the culture and habits in a country and even its roots. Further, these points expand into what is the market for the Arts here. Singapore has no particular culture that can be well defined unlike our neighbours. This goes into the fact that we have no particular Art to stick with. The first things that come to mind when I think about Arts here is the things different races do for Art, traditionally. The Chinese have their wayangs, dances and music. Chinese Wayang or Da Xi (Big Show) has been a dying trade. Most youngsters nowadays don't bother watching these show unlike our elders.
