Several weeks ago I addressed the importance of athletic administrators and coaches assisting athletes with academics. Kathi Wieskamp, the assistant athletic director at Lincoln North Star High School, wrote an article which appeared in the Interscholastic Athletic Administration magazine’s summer 2008 edition entitled “No Athlete Left Behind.” The article focuses on a high school athletic academic support program. The benefits she defined would work for all athletes at any high school. They are as follows: 1. Increased student achievement: Student athletes are held accountable for academic achievement. 2. Increased academic confidence: When coaches and teachers are more supportive, the student athlete will be more confident. 3. Athletes maintain eligibility: With a support program, coaches and athletes can be more proactive in keeping up with grades and class assignments. 4. Students receive the help they need: Coaches tutoring in the study center give students extra help. Many times athletes feel more comfortable asking coaches for help then they do asking teachers. 5. Increased communication between students and teachers: Frequent grade checks will promote students and teachers to discuss problems and needs. 6. Teachers gain a greater appreciation for coaches: I liked this benefit best of all. Communication between teacher and coach is vital to the athlete. 7.
