I signed up for AMEX's Connoiseur promotion because they offered $100 worth of discounts at restaurants with the signup. Although they didn't say it specifically, I assumed it would be a $100 AMEX gift certificate. That was clearly my mistake to make that assumption. What wasn't my mistake, however, was the fact that what they did send was a certificate for $100 off restaurants at restaurant.com. What is misleading is that you can buy these certificates directly from restaurant.com for $16-20. So the offer itself was really worth only a maximum of $20, not $100. I admit the wording wasn't technically inaccurate - you do get $100 off at the restaurants, but you could have purchased those same $100 discounts for only $20 or less. ...
