West High bid adieu to approximately 250 seniors Friday evening in a classy graduation ceremony as the sun set over a jam-packed Memorial Stadium. “This is it,” class president Jennifer Madison said. “It all began four years ago, but it didn’t seem real until about four minutes ago.” It was a bittersweet moment, said valedictorian Ajay Ravichandran, who will attend the University of Chicago in the fall. He borrowed a line from William Shakespeare to describe his feelings: “Parting is such sweet sorrow.” “Today we should all be proud of ourselves,” said salutatorian Meredith Gaylo, who’s headed for the University of Rochester. “We’re proud of each other. Our teachers are proud of us. And most of all, our families and parents are proud of us. “Therefore, it’s a great time to ask them for money,” she joked. Phillip Benson, West High principal, said the class of ‘08 covered a broad spectrum of personalities and experiences. “This is a very diverse group that has really bonded well together,” said Phillip Benson, West High principal. “I’ve been very impressed in my first year at West, seeing how this school doesn’t have a lot of cliques, and how there’s very few problems between the students. They’re very supportive of each other.” “Another attribute of this class is that they were very competitive,” he added. “It was very tight among the top students, they were within a few tenths of a point of each other (in grade point average).
