Branch County’s own Mixed Martial Art (MMA) superstar Dan “The Beast” Severn will be looking to inspire a different sort of fighter this month — the troops. From Aug. 18-28, Severn will be traveling throughout Afghanistan to visit with United States troops stationed there. “It’s for morale building,” Severn said. He compared the trip to those “along the lines of Bob Hope,” designed to inspire and entertain our servicemen while they are serving overseas. “You wouldn’t believe how powerful your name is,” said Severn, adding that a sports marketing company approached him and asked that he make the trip. It’s all about the “demographics,” he said, noting that much of the military personnel is made up of males, in the 18-24 age group, who enjoy the sport of MMA.
