A bishop impressed Lauderdale Lakes commissioners recently with a lengthy, flattering prayer. While clergy-led prayers have stirred debates at other city halls, people attending Lauderdale Lakes' commission meeting this week may have been comfortable with the idea. Such prayers aren't common at Lauderdale Lakes City Hall, but no one protested. Maurice Clarke, a bishop at West Broward Church of God, would later award a high-schooler $500 for her college tuition but as he walked up to the lectern, prayer was his first priority. He read from four pages, first reciting a biblical passage from Romans 13:1-7, parts of which hail the institution of government. "Everyone must submit to governing authorities," he told residents and commissioners. "For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God." The bishop continued to read: "Pay your taxes, too. ... For government workers need to be paid. They are serving God in what they do." In one part, the prayer suggested to God that commissioners and the public aren't living up to their full potential. ...
