NEW YORK: There is only one story in town. Indeed, there is only one story in the world today. Everyone wants to be at the centre of it. The race to save the global financial system from collapse affects all of us, but politicians know that it has the capacity to make or break their careers. Thus, Gordon Brown, like presidential contender John McCain, is desperate to place himself at the centre of events. McCain suspended his campaign to head to Washington DC for talks at the White House. The prime minister would love to do the same. He is in New York for a UN summit on development but he knows that today "it's the global economy, stupid" that matters. Brown and McCain both represent the incumbent parties with most to lose from this economic crisis. However, if they, not their opponents, are seen to be making the running on solving it, the politics could work the other way around. ...
