About RSSMicro Search Engine
In May 2006, RSSMicro (Irvine, California) launched its beta search engine, an experimental search tool designed to reach and explore new frontiers in search. It instantly became the buzz on many search engine blogs and discussion forums. Since then, RSSMicro has received hundreds of reviews and comments. Many of these ideas were successfully implemented to form a new and highly competitive search service which has never been offered by rival search engines.

Why Search RSS Feeds?
  • Fresh Content - RSS feed has the highest level of fresh content, and it is known that fresh content has the highest demand among all Internet users.
  • Green - RSS feed indexing and crawling technology requires less energy per KBs of fresh content. Fresh content indexing ratio to all content crawled is nearly 50% while our estimates show that a typical website crawl produce less than 10% fresh content for every visit. In other words we use less bandwidth and need much less computational power to crawl and index fresh content on the web.
  • Time Sensitivity - RSS feed is well formatted to indicate date and time in which articles are being published, providing a platform for indexing, search and news analysis in real-time.
  • Meta Data - RSS feed offers valuable meta data information such as date/time published, language, encoding, categories, author information and many more as part of its XML standard, in addition organizations can expand XML meta data information, distribute organization specific meta data within their RSS feeds.
  • Web 2.0 - Web page is no longer a viable concept in Web 2.0 application foundation, as growing number of websites become online apps with interactive features and AJAX capabilities the content which is being generated based on user interaction would be inaccessible to the traditional web crawlers. It seems likely, apps will tend to distribute content through various feeds.

RSSMicro was formed to explore new search capabilities where the web contents become extremely dynamic and grow exponentially. This behavior, along with higher user expectations, creates a dilemma that requires a search service whose capabilities go beyond the limits of conventional search engines. Without new data formats or attached date and time to the content, there will be no reliable search service or product that can efficiently index and make the content available for search. RSSMicro is building and exploring a new search service which balances the freshness, relevance, and reliability of the search results along with a substantial gain in search performance and efficiency.

XML vs. HTML
Structured XML content is superior to HTML in many ways including but not limited to storage, data definition, distribution, systematic integration, and intelligent application development. A globally accepted standard for XML content such as RSS feed can bring together all small to enterprise-level businesses for online collaboration and real-time data integration, regardless of what applications or tools they use. The constant interaction between applications on global basis is ideal for social networking sites and distributed applications, or any other collective computing projects or services.

In other words, a new web is evolving which has its roots in XML based feeds rather than HTML pages. Some may refer to Web 2.0 or 3.0 but nevertheless the data is mainly comprised of user generated XML feeds. Unknowingly, we might be building a new web which is a duplicate of the original in terms of the content but is being transformed into XML. The new structure offers rich data sources with enhanced search capabilities (Searchability), data freely moves from one application to the other (Integrability), and makes the entire system more efficient (Scalability). Less bandwidth is used, few applications needed to run the same task and increasingly more applications can work collectively together. The transformed web separates the actual data from web interfaces, applications, and other formatting instructions, allows everyone to consume the XML data anywhere, anytime, on all devices, and in all custom made applications.

AJAX
A relatively new web programming technique called AJAX imposes a significant challenge to conventional search engine's crawlers and other bots. AJAX programming is growing fast; it improves current web interfaces and applications by offering much better user experience, it profoundly transforms a web application which comprised of multiple static pages into a single, auto-refreshing, interactive one. Surprisingly, webmasters and web developers show little concern on how this new generation of web applications would impact search engines. In a nutshell, conventional search engine's crawlers are not able to detect and index contents on a website which has been mostly developed using AJAX programming. This is another reason to believe that website owners, publishers, along search engine industry should agree upon other methods for data distribution.

An RSS feed which draws a fine line between the application interface and updated, valuable data on a website is where search engines should increasingly visit to find new content. RSS feed crawling improves bandwidth usage, it guarantees the content availability and reliability since the data published is chronologically ordered and is made to be distributed or publicized. RSS feed eliminates the AJAX impact introduced on newly developed web interfaces, it addresses the privacy and copyright issues and offers many more advantages in today's dynamic web environment.
